Academic Decathlon
Our Academic Decathlon team is by invitation only for our top
academic students in grades 7 and 8. Our team studies together starting in October until the Diocesean competition occurs in March. Areas of study include: Logic, Current Events, English, Fine Arts, Literature, Mathematics, Religion, Science, and Social Studies. A super quiz is given that includes all of these subjects. The goals of the decathlon are to promote academic excellence, promote collaborative spirit and cooperative learning skills, and to promote logical and higher order thinking. Likewise, other goals include recognizing the contributions of parents, teachers, administrators, as well as, business and community members in supporting high standards for all students, and to celebrate the diversity, excellence and tradition of Catholic schools.
Geography Bee
Each year St. Bonaventure School participates in the National Geographic Bee, from the National Geographic Society. Fourth through eighth grade students may sign up to compete in the school-level bee held after school in early December. Thirty students may compete (if more than 30 students sign up, a qualifying quiz is given). The school winner has additional time to prepare before taking a written test in January. That written test is sent away and entered in the next level of competition. High scorers from within the state travel to Sacramento to compete in a State-level Geographic Bee.
See the National Geographic website for more information and study aides.

Mythology
St. Bonaventure Catholic School has been offering students in grades 3-8 the opportunity to take the National Mythology Exam since 1990.
Along with Greek and Roman Mythology, our students also study Native American, African and Norse Myths.
The Mythology exam is an international test. The exam comes from the American Classical League at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Studying for the exam begins in December and concludes with the exam which is administered in early March.
SBS TV Broadcast
SBS TV broadcast is student oriented. The role of the SBS broadcast and tech team members is to make a year-long commitment to serve SBS student body with multimedia presentations using technology. Eighth grade students who are eligible may sign up for the SBS broadcast team. Each broadcast team goes live on the closed circuit SBS TV network on Mondays and Fridays. The students work in pairs and will broadcast the prayers, intentions, Pledge of Allegiance, school news, and other announcements from the IT Room under the direction of Mr. Stanford.
The eighth grade students who do not want to be on the broadcast team but wish to be on the tech team may sign up and will create a PowerPoint and assist Mr. Stanford in the operation of SBS TV.
All students who sign up must meet certain requirements and serve at the discretion of Mr. Stanford.
Student Council
The Student Council Board is composed of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. The candidates for Student Council must meet certain academic and citizenship requirements that vary slightly depending upon which office they seek. Qualifications for candidates and campaign regulations are explained to interested parties prior to elections.
Elections for 7th and 8th grade candidates are held in the spring for the following school year.
Fifth grade teachers appoint 6th grade representatives.
Students in grades 4-7 are eligible to vote.
